- Abstract:
This article proposes an expanded definition of health literacy which encompasses the skills and competencies of people to evaluate health information, make informed choices, and reduce health risks while increasing their quality of life. The author asserts old assumptions of health literacy ignore cultural differences, alternative beliefs and communication channels. The needs of English language learners are discussed in regard to medication, treatment plans, and the health care system. It is proposed that the challenges of patient care and compliance would be better met if health care professionals could better determine the patient's knowledge level.
