Discusses the evidence available regarding the clinical effectiveness and health economics of the self management of oral anticoagulation therapy by patients. Wish of patients to be able to measure their own international normalised ratio and interpret the results without a doctor's help; Indication that therapeutic control of the international normalised ratio leads to a reduction in major adverse events, such as thrombosis and haemorrhage; Reliability of near patient testing for self management.
